"Charles is not Charles with his mouth shut. That's like me playing....with hair." -- Jordan.
Rockets were playing without the injured Hakeem and Drexler. Pippen was playing only his 5th game after returning from his long injury. The stage was set for two old friends and they didn't disappoint.
They were both 35 years old but their competitive fire was still young. Besides the great performances, there was lots of thrash talking, fun and mutual respect for one another. The only thing missing were the cracked asphalt and chain nets.
Enjoy.
Post game notes & quotes:
=====================
CHICAGO -- They yapped, jawed and traded barbs. They crashed to the floor together after one under-the-basket collision. And after a timeout, they exchanged a lighthearted head butt.
It wasn't the playground, just two highly paid NBA stars and two good friends, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, going at one another on national TV on a Sunday afternoon at Chicago. Maybe for one of the last times.
"There was a lot of trash talking today, most done by me and Charles. It just adds to the game," Jordan said after scoring 45 points and leading the Chicago Bulls past Barkley and the Houston Rockets, 106-100.
"Charles is not Charles with his mouth shut," Jordan said. "That's like me playing with hair."
"You may see us jawing at each other every now and then. I think the fans get an understanding of the competitiveness between us and it's not done in a nasty way. It's done with a lot of smiling," Jordan added.
"We're trying to jockey for the referees' preference."
Barkley, like Jordan, did more than run his mouth. He scored 35 points - 19 over his average - and had 14 rebounds but still the Rockets lost for the 10th time in 14 games.
"It was old-time trash-talking," Barkley said. "These kids today think trash-talking means getting real personal and challenging your manhood. They're missing the point. It's just about trying to get to the other guy a little bit, having fun.
"This was like it used to be when (Larry) Bird and Magic (Johnson) went at it. Or when Isiah (Thomas) was doing his thing with the Pistons.
"I went by him once and told him, `You're an old man.' He's two days older than me.
"He told me, `You got no chance today, and you never will.' It was all stuff like that."
"We are tight, very tight. That was just us playing around," Barkley added. "Michael is like a brother to me. We have a great relationship, but we also love competing like cats and dogs when we play each other. He wants it badly, I want it badly. He likes to beat me, I like to beat him. I hate (bleeping) losing, I can tell you that. But our friendship is bigger than basketball and any one game, believe me. "
"Me and Michael will carry on as friends forever. He's done so much for me, and I feel I've done some things to help him along the way. After we're done playing this game, we'll be golfing until the day we die."
"Every time we have the opportunity to compete, we realize it may be the last," said Jordan.
"We're friends, but I don't feel sorry for him. One of us has to lose and I'd rather it be him."
It's the law of the playground. No breaks, no sympathy. Especially for your brother.
The Rockets played without injured stars Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler and then lost guard Mario Elie with 6:54 left in the first half when he strained his left shoulder after colliding under the basket with Scottie Pippen.
But every time it looked like the Bulls would run away, Houston fought back with determined play from Barkley, who made 11-of-14 field goal attempts.
Barkley's intensity and aggressiveness made Dennis Rodman (no points, five rebounds in 35 minutes) ineffective, turning the NBA's leading rebounder into a pussycat with leopard-spotted hair.
"Charles doesn't take any of the mess that Dennis may try to do to other players to get into their minds," Jordan said.
"Actually, I think Charles tries to beat him to the punch early. In Phoenix (two years ago), he threw an elbow at Dennis and more or less held him at bay the rest of the game. Today, he threw Dennis down early. (Barkley) got a foul, but I think it set the precedent to Dennis that he's not going to manhandle (Barkley)."
Four points by Othella Harrington and Emanual Davis's three-pointer highlighted an 11-2 fourth-quarter run that got the Rockets within 90-87.
Jordan then hit a pair of three-pointers and Scott Burrell added another as Chicago went up 10 with just more than four minutes remaining.

J.R. Smith made so many boneheaded plays in last year's postseason that he got a benching and a public scolding from his coach.
After working his way out of George Karl's doghouse this season, the new and improved Smith has led the Denver Nuggets to the cusp of a return trip to the NBA playoffs.
The super sub's 23-point performance sparked Denver to a 111-94 rout of the Houston Rockets on Sunday night that both clarified and cluttered the wild Western Conference playoff race.
"That's all he's got to do is come into the game and the energy is there," said Allen Iverson, who scored 33 points. "It hypes us up. You look at the things he does on the floor, it excites us as teammates. Just see the way he can shoot the ball, the way he can dribble the ball, the way he can jump, he has the whole package.
"There's nothing on the court he can't do."
It was the 13th time Smith has come off the bench to score 20 or more points, most in the NBA among players who haven't started a single game.
"He's been a big spark for us, bringing that energy and excitement we were looking for," Carmelo Anthony said. "He's come around for us. It's just great to see him out there playing the way he's playing and knowing he's a big part of our success."
Now all the Nuggets have to do to reach the playoffs for the fifth straight time is beat lowly Memphis on Wednesday night at home.
Denver (49-32) moved a half-game ahead of Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Nuggets might even be able to catch Dallas for the seventh seed if the Mavericks lose at home to New Orleans on Wednesday night.
As for the Rockets (54-26), they can still secure the top seed in the West, but they're going to need plenty of help to do it.
First off, they need to win their last two games, at Utah on Monday night and at home against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday night. They also need the two teams ahead of them to lose Tuesday night: the conference-leading Los Angeles Lakers host Sacramento and New Orleans hosts the Clippers.
McGrady was flabbergasted that the Rockets played so poorly with so much to play for on this night.
"That team needed a win badly and we played like it really didn't matter to us," McGrady said. "And at this point in the season, although we clinched, we still have to bring it every night."
The Rockets fell 1½ games behind the Lakers atop the crazy conference, where Golden State could become the first team in NBA history to win 50 games and miss the playoffs.
"I'm not so concerned about the No. 1 spot," McGrady said. "I'm more concerned about how we're playing right now."
Bouncing in and out of the eighth and final playoff spot for a month, no team has had more of a roller-coaster ride than the Nuggets, who won a huge game at Golden State only to lose at Utah on Saturday night before bouncing back against the Rockets.
"It's impossible to feel good because for three weeks we've been feeling stressed," Karl said. "You never play three playoff teams in three games in four nights in three different cities that had huge, huge ramifications. We survived it; we won two out of three, but we're still not out of the woods."
To have a shot at keeping the Nuggets out of the postseason party, the Warriors need to win at Phoenix on Monday night and beat Seattle on Wednesday.
But even that won't matter if the Nuggets handle their business against the lottery-bound Grizzlies, who will be playing the second game of a back-to-back against a Denver team that will have had two days off.
Iverson said the enigmatic Nuggets certainly won't blow it now that they finally have their postseason destiny in their own hands.
"We understand what's at stake, and we don't underestimate them because we know they have talented guys on their team," Iverson said.
This was a surprisingly easy win for the Nuggets, who raced to 43 fastbreak points as the Rockets shot 34 percent. Denver pulled away with a 10-0 first-half run sparked by consecutive 3-pointers from Smith.
Luther Head lead Houston with 19 points and McGrady scored 16. Marcus Camby grabbed 14 rebounds, all but one of them off the defensive glass, and blocked seven shots for Denver, which led 61-44 at halftime and never looked back.
"We didn't have any energy at all," Houston forward Chuck Hayes said. "They were the team that played the night before, but we played like we had. Maybe it meant more to them and we paid for it."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., December 22,2008(AP) -- While Yao Ming won the showdown with fellow Chinese Olympian Yi Jianlian, the smallest player on the court stole the show from the 7-footers.
Yao had 24 points and 16 rebounds and Aaron Brooks tied his career-high with 22 points as the Houston Rockets won their season-high fourth straight game with a 114-91 victory over the New Jersey Nets on Monday night in a game that was televised live to China.
With Yao clogging the lane, the Rockets limited the Nets to a season-low 13 points in the first quarter in taking a 29-13 lead and never being threatened again. Houston shot 58 percent for the game, including 9-of-19 from 3-point range.
Keyon Dooling had 17 points to lead New Jersey. The Nets got just 10 points apiece from Yi, Devin Harris, Vince Carter on a combined 11 of 37 shooting.
The 10 points was a season-low for Harris, who has emerged as one of the league's top point guards less than a year after being acquired in a trade for Jason Kidd.
Tracy McGrady added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Rockets, who won for the eighth time in 10 games. Carl Landry added 13 points.
Houston never trailed after McGrady hit a jumper to snap a 4-all tie. Luis Scola scored in the lane against Yi and Brooks followed with the first of what would be his four 3-pointers to push the lead to 11-4.
After Yi followed a miss by Harris, Brooks converted a four-point play and McGrady hit two free throws to give Houston a 17-6 lead.
Brooks finished with 11 points in the quarter, and closing out the period by setting up Landry for a layup in the final seconds for one of the six assists by the 6-footer.
Houston led by 23 points in the second quarter and the Nets never got closer than 16 in the third. The fourth quarter was mostly garbage time for the reserves.
NOTES: The Yao-Yi matchup was televised to China live by the nation's largest network. The Nets distributed about 40 credentials to international members of the media. ...The Rockets had 61 points in the first half, the sixth time they have scored 60 or more points in a half. ...Houston has won 11 straight road games vs. Eastern Conference opponents dating to last season.
