In 1999 a writer used one of my sparring sessions as an open for an article. The writer dramatized the sparring session in a way that made me seem lacking of skill. Because the article was coming up as #1 on Google I posted this video as a response. What makes this video pertinent to the said article is that this boxing match occurred 3 weeks after the said article. The opponent was the #1 light heavyweight amateur in the United States and the Under 19 World Champion. He later went on to be the #1 heavyweight amateur in the United States and also carried a professional record of 23 wins and 1 loss (to James Toney). In other words: This guy is as good as they get, period. He stops opponents at will with his slick maneuvers and lightning punches. After winning a decision against me (The Northeast Ohio Champ) he handily stopped his next opponent, a champ from another area in the great lakes region.
It is customary to exchange well wishes or congratulations after the match and neither of us initiated the customary exchange. A few weeks later we ran into each other at the Eastern Olympic Trials and we both rushed to say hello. I wanted to give a delayed congratulations and it appeared that he wanted to express a thank you for giving him a hard fight. He told me that he had only two hard fights all way to the Championship final in Colorado, one from me and another from an Army gentleman.
George Foreman said, "Boxing is a sport that all sports aspire to". Amateur boxing is a great sport. You can compete you heart out and it makes you appreciate your opponent for providing the opportunity. It's about digging deep and overcoming self limitations. Once you are in that ring all the running and training and sparring is on the line. It's go time. That's an amazing feeling and I'm glad I got to experience it. I was blessed to be the best boxer, in my weight class, from Northeast Ohio on two occasions, 1993 Golden Gloves Champ and 1999 Lake Erie Association Champ. If not for various reasons, particularly a nose with a tendency to break, I would have been Cleveland Champ more often. As an amateur I had 17 fights (13 wins and 4 losses). What's funny is that 3 out of 4 of the losses can be attributed to a broken nose. A broken nose never bothered me in the midst of a match but blood in the amateurs is a sure fire way for a referee to stop a fight and pin the loss on the bleeder... Oh well.
It was an honor to represent my region in the US championships and Eastern Olympic trials. It would have been nice to capture the ultimate national prize but I know that I represented the competitive spirit of my sporting city well. Posting a loss is kind of odd by most standards. Certainly I can sift through my mother's videos and find matches where I won by decision or stoppage but that's not a point I'm interested in making. This video is of a well fought, tactical match against one of the best amateur boxers on the planet. That's it.
Boxing was a tool to develop at a time in life. Playing organized basketball or soccer develops competitive characteristics that last a lifetime. The tactical and gauging approach of Chess also develops characteristics. Boxing can be looked at in regards athletic and strategic. It all adds up to our own personal experiences and the lessons and value we draw from those experiences applying in forward motion. It is also about community. The friends and acquaintances I've made from the amateur boxing community are the most honorable and good hearted I could ever know. There are many other communities in my life: Volunteer communities, Faith Communities, Heritage Communities, Professional Communities, City Communities, Peer Communities. We are all mosaics of the people with whom we share experience and personal growth. All of these communities play a role in my life as I'm sure your communities play a role in your life.
Thanks for searching my name on Google and thanks for reading my thoughts.

PROCTORSURF.COM - BOARDS
The Accelerator
Skill level: intermediate to advanced
Type of waves: primarily designed for knee high to shoulder and weak, but it goes great in everything up to slightly overhead.
This board is specifically designed to make small wave performance surfing easy. You get fast-driving speed bursts off the front foot and hair-trigger, tail whipping warp-arcs off the back foot. A wider nose outline and low entry rocker get this board into waves quicker and blot it down the line faster. A bendy tail rocker sweeps off the back fin making it quick and responsive in tight rail-arcing hook-turns. An even single concave runs through the midsection of the board making for a "wide open sweet spot" i.e. the board wants to go even if you don't have your feet right in the perfect spot every time.
Right at the fins the rocker 'drops out' and the single concave goes deep....this creates what feels like an engine under your back foot. The deep concave forms an air pocket as well as a straighter path to compress the water through the extreme rocker of the tail....this air pocket acts like a gas pedal or "accelerator"...push back on the tail and it rockets through turns like a piece of ice on wax paper.
Here's the dimension I suggest based off your normal "good waves" shortboard: ride this board one inch shorter, 1/4" wider in the middle, 1/2" wider in the nose, and 1/8" wider in the tail. Go with the same thickness just with a fuller, boxy rail. This creates a flatter deck which gives the board a springier flex pattern....key for that extra little thwang in small waves.
Oh yea...as a bonus, it also goes looneybinsmental in everything up to slightly overhead.

Sunday Silence, who raised more questions than he answered when he beat Easy Goer by two and a half lengths in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, proved himself a worthy Triple Crown contender today by winning the 114th and closest Preakness Stakes ever at Pimlico Race Course. The blackish colt from California raced head and head with Easy Goer for the length of the stretch before regaining the lead in the final yards to win by a long nose.
The last time a Preakness was decided in a photo finish was when Affirmed held off Alydar by a neck in 1978. Now Sunday Silence is one victory away from becoming racing's first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed, and his rivalry with Easy Goer, a son of Alydar, is the tightest Triple Crown battle since then. The two colts will hook up again in the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 10, where victory would bring Sunday Silence's owners a total of $5 million in purses and bonuses for the series. A Claim of Foul
The winner had to survive a claim of foul from Pat Day, Easy Goer's rider, who alleged interference by Pat Valenzuela and Sunday Silence through their stretch duel. After reviewing the films for seven minutes, the stewards let the order of finish stand. Another unrelated foul claim, by the rider of Dansil, who was fourth, against Rock Point, who was third, was also disallowed.
The bettors in a record Pimlico crowd of 90,145, unconvinced by Sunday Silence's weaving Derby finish and the slow final time of that race, made Easy Goer the 3-to-5 favorite today and let Sunday Silence off as the second choice at 2 to 1. Sunday Silence paid $6.20 for $2 to win after running the mile and three-sixteenths in 1:53 4/5, the third fastest Preakness ever, behind Tank's Prospect's 1:53 2/5 in 1985 and Gate Dancer's 1:53 3/5 in 1984.
Rock Point, who skipped the Derby after running second to Easy Goer in the Wood Memorial last month, was up for third, five lengths behind Easy Goer and two lengths in front of Dansil. Hawkster was fifth with Houston tiring to finish sixth, and it was 26 more lengths back to the outclassed locals, Pulverizing and Northern Wolf. Awe Inspiring, as expected, was an early scratch.
Sunday Silence, a son of Halo and the Understanding mare Wishing Well, is owned by Arthur B. Hancock 3d, Ernest Gaillard and Charlie Whittingham and trained by Whittingham. The colt has won six of eight career starts and is undefeated in five races this year. Sunday Silence survived a serious illness and a vanning accident early in his career, was twice rejected by buyers at yearling sales, and came back this week from a bruised right front foot that forced him to miss two days of training. A More Genuine Race
The tight finish capped a race in which the two principals both looked as if they would win easily at some point. Each appeared to fire his best shot, and while there will be plenty of interest in a rematch, and some excuses made for the loser, the race seemed more genuine than the Derby.
''I think this puts to rest the talk that Easy Goer is the better horse,'' Valenzuela said. ''I think his horse was overrated and mine was underrated. I knew Pat was going to claim foul. He was grasping at straws. He didn't want to let the public down and he didn't want to let the Eastern writers down.''
Shug McGaughey, Easy Goer's trainer, said within moments of the finish that he was eager to try Sunday Silence one more time in the Belmont. But McGaughey seemed even more dispirited today than he was after the Derby, which he had hoped was a fluke. Poor Start for Easy Goer
''We'll just try again,'' McGaughey said. ''I guess I'm going to start hearing a whole lot about Affirmed and Alydar now, but I hope we can put that to rest in the Belmont.''
