Nike collaborates with Cannes-winning Director, Carlo Ledesma
and Producer Mel Lozano, to produce a 60-minute documentary
inspired by Filipino basketball entitled "My Game"
Unique identity of local basketball culture will be unveiled through a journey spanning local hoop stars' humble beginnings to their achievements today.
August 3, 2007, Makati, Philippines -- Nike announced today it's collaboration with Cannes-winning director-producer tandem of Carlo Ledesma and Mel Lozano to film local Nike documentary featuring local basketball heroes. Entitled "My Game," the film project due to be screened by September 2007 is expected to ultimately inspire young Filipino ballers and contribute to the development of Philippine basketball.
"In collaborating with Carlo Ledesma and Mel Lozano to come up with this documentary, we highlight the importance of outdoor basketball and pick-up games in the overall development of an athlete. Nike understands that the 'DNAs' of basketball superstars begin in the playground. It is where their initial exposure of the game begins and where their individual styles start to develop. Likewise, we also aim to inspire the young athletes in reaching for their hoop dreams," explained Nike Philippines Country Marketing Manager Melissa Crucillo Crucillo.
The documentary stars some of the Philippines' top professional basketball players, James Yap, Arwind Santos, Ren-Ren Ritualo, Don-Don Hontiveros and two high-flying collegiate ballers, Rico Maierhofer and Jobe Nkemakolam. The film showcases the joys and pains of some of today's basketball icons, conveying the message that anyone who dreams and acts on their aspirations will eventually hit it big—as proven by the featured ballers' experience. The 60-minute documentary is Nike Philippines' latest endeavor to help enrich the Philippine basketball landscape.
"This film will tell the stories of how (these) ballers got to where they are today," explained Ledesma, who earned his film degree from the University of Sydney in Australia. "The film's look has a rich, colorful feel about it, to emphasize the diversity of the Philippines and show that we are a country of many cultures. Whilst basketball is predominantly a Western inspired game, I was careful not to emulate their style too much. Filipino basketball while it is still heavily influenced by American culture is still very rural, that's why it is important to show the simple side of the Filipino life and how basketball is part of it," Ledesma explains.
"My Game" brings back the hardcourt heroes to the 'playgrounds' where they first picked up the ball and had their individual styles initially honed. The never-before-seen chapters of these ballers' lives will also be given unconventional treatment in terms of screenplay, editing and delivery and is guaranteed to keep audiences enthralled, educated and at the end of the film, emotionally involved and inspired with the victories of these basketball heroes.
Ledesma is expected to inject a unique perspective to the documentary as the young filmmaker is also a sports buff himself who considers Ultimate Frisbee as his top passion. His long-time involvement as producer/anchor of the sports-oriented television show "Gameplan" and his being a former Nike collaborator have provided him fresh insights on new ways of presenting Nike's vision.
